Check out this recent memo below from the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles sent to law enforcement officials regarding the new DOT regulations:

Massachusetts has adopted Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations requiring intrastate motor carriers in Massachusetts to obtain and display a United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) number as of September 1, 2018 (per 540 CMR 2.22).

This applies to motor carriers operating the following commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), which must be permanently marked with a USDOT number:

 Engaged in intrastate commerce (meaning business is conducted solely within Massachusetts) having a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 or more pounds; or

 Used in the transportation of hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding; or

 Designed to transport more than 15 passengers, including the driver, used in intrastate commerce in Massachusetts.

There will also be a new requirement that intrastate motor carriers have the owner’s name marked on the vehicle, in permanent letters plainly visible from each side.

Despite this regulation taking effect on September 1, the RMV is requesting that law enforcement delay enforcing this until January 1 to give carriers time to comply. Between September 1 and December 31, please only issue warnings.

Everyone should still take warning of this regulation and contact our office with any other questions you have!
